How To Set Intentions (Not Expectations)

Until a few years ago, I did what most of us do – reflected on my failings, empty promises, and unachieved goals when it came to what I knew was best for my body, mind, and soul. The pattern was always the same.

1. Identified the changes I wanted to make.

2. Set “doable” goals - daily exercise, more patience, stay in touch with friends and family.

3. Begin the plan of attack - schedule, schedule, schedule.

And, yet….

I “failed” to achieve my goals because the expectations I placed on myself were out of reach.  For me, exercise daily translated to joining a gym and sticking to a rigid daily schedule, patience morphed into me maintaining a saintly disposition and never being annoyed, and staying in touch required me calling someone I knew daily. 

My self-imposed expectations weren’t grounded in the feeling of luxury or reality, for that matter. 

Not ANOTHER Commitment….I QUIT!

It wasn’t until I figured out that setting an intention for the feeling I wanted to achieve that things changed for me. I found the secret - the lock and key!

This approach allows me to be aware of the choices and actions I make daily.  If this resonates with you, please do the same.   Set an intention where you mindfully choose a new thought pattern or action that produces the feeling you aspire to have - instead of living on autopilot.    

Here is a thought…
